EOU recognized as Military Friendly School, takes designation seriously

Eastern Oregon University has once again been recognized as a Military Friendly® School.

The 2023-24 designation sets EOU apart and identifies the university as an ideal fit for potential military and veteran students.

“I feel when a student comes here and makes contact they get first-class treatment,” Kerry Thompson, Military/Veteran Coordinator for EOU, said. “We’re veterans, I’ve had some experience directing them to resources, they get taken care of.”

EOU will be named in the April Guide to Military Friendly® Schools.

La Grande veteran Brandon Anger has only nine classes left to earn his degree at EOU. After serving in the Marine Corps in North Carolina he returned to the Grande Ronde Valley and started classes as a Mountaineer.

“Why not,” Anger said. “I’m from here. I don’t have any complaints, the smaller class sizes are better for me, smaller is better.”

The veteran and native is earning his degree in Health and Human Performance. I want to help people get healthy, he said.

“I’ve got nothing to say but good things,” Anger said. “It has all been super smooth.”

Kerry said there are systems in place at EOU to help veterans, including priority registration. Prior to Covid, Kerry said the Veteran Resource Center on campus regularly had visitors with shared experiences. When Covid protocols forced many students online, they stayed online, Kerry said.
