Avoid winter damage on new concrete

Did you know certain de-icers can permanently damage new concrete? The City considers new concrete to be less than five years old and warns chemical de-icers, including those containing ammonium nitrate or calcium chloride, should be avoided on any new concrete..

If your concrete is less than five years old:

  • Don’t use de-icers containing ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, magnesium chloride, magnesium acetate, or magnesium nitrate.
  • Don’t use rock salt (sodium chloride) or calcium chloride.
  • Read the instructions and disclaimers on any product purchased.  They typically recommend not to use on “new concrete.”
As alternatives, City Staff recommend using cat litter or sand on new concrete. in winter weather. Contact Engineering at 541-966-0203 if you have any questions.

Per City Ordinance No. 2320, “the expense of maintaining a sidewalk in good repair shall be borne by and apportioned among the lots and premises abutting on or along the sidewalk.”
