In 2024, Medicaid providers in Ontario billed a total of $244,254 for services classified as Durable Medical Equipment, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This amount reflected a 2.2% increase over 2023, when $239,072 in claims were submitted for the category.

Medicaid operates as a state-administered, jointly federally and state-funded public health insurance program. Serving low-income individuals and families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities, Medicaid is among the largest health care components in the United States.

Since Medicaid is publicly funded, shifts in local billing volumes illustrate how health care resources are allocated within a community.

The Durable Medical Equipment category represents grouped Medicaid services identified by standardized HCPCS and CPT coding. For this analysis, billing codes were systematically assigned to specific categories using consistent code prefixes and ranges, ensuring that related services are grouped together, which prevents double counting and supports accurate year-over-year comparisons.

Across all Medicaid service categories, spending increased, but Durable Medical Equipment was the fourth-highest by total payments in Ontario in 2024.

Statewide in Oregon, Durable Medical Equipment ranked 11th in Medicaid spending categories for 2024.

Over the five years prior to 2024, Medicaid payments linked to Durable Medical Equipment in Ontario rose by $119,665, or 96%. Certain periods experienced faster growth, notably in 2023 and 2021, with significant year-over-year increases.

While Durable Medical Equipment payments were distributed throughout the city, the majority were concentrated within a small number of ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 97914 saw the highest total at $244,253. The top 1 ZIP codes made up 100% of the city’s Medicaid payments for Durable Medical Equipment that year.

Medicaid payments within the Durable Medical Equipment category also clustered among a few individual billing codes in Ontario.

To compare, Ontario’s Medicaid payments for Durable Medical Equipment grew by 2.2% between 2024 and 2023, whereas all Medicaid service categories combined in Ontario saw a 9.7% increase within the same interval.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, total combined federal and state Medicaid spending reached approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023, representing around 18% of all national health expenditures, significantly higher than about $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This rise marks an increase of about 40% over just a few years, largely spurred by greater enrollment and utilization during and after the pandemic.

Recent federal appropriations under the Trump administration have featured several significant proposals aimed at reducing federal Medicaid funding and overhauling the program. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is expected to cut more than $1 trillion in federal Medicaid spending across the next decade and implements new policies such as work requirements and higher cost-sharing, which could reduce coverage and funding for some enrollees. These measures are anticipated to shift greater financial responsibility to states and limit increases in federal Medicaid support, though the program still covers tens of millions nationwide.
