Eastern Oregon University announced on March 26 that it will host Community Fazioli Piano Day on Saturday, April 11, inviting members of the public to play its $150,000 Fazioli piano at McKenzie Theatre in Loso Hall.
The event aims to make a world-class musical instrument accessible to people of all ages and experience levels. Organizers say this outreach project not only enriches the local music community but also supports EOU Music Scholarship Funds through voluntary donations.
“We warmly invite community members of all ages and experience levels to come play and enjoy this beautiful instrument,” Mio Aoike, faculty member and pianist in the Music Department, said. “Whether you’re just starting, returning to the piano after many years, or play regularly, you are very welcome here. We invite the community to come and display their talents.”
While participation is free for both performers and audience members, donations are encouraged to benefit music scholarships at EOU Foundation. The university highlights that hundreds of students, community members, and guests perform with the grand piano every year during various events such as choir concerts and orchestra performances.
The Fazioli concert grand was first introduced by EOU Foundation in December 2018 at the Holiday Music Festival after donors raised $150,000 over twelve months for its purchase. The campaign replaced a piano built in 1953 and coincided with renovations at McKenzie Theatre.
“Our goal is simply to bring people together, share the joy of music, and make this extraordinary instrument accessible to everyone in a supportive and encouraging space,” Peter Wordelman, professor of music at EOU, said.
Those interested can sign up online for a performance slot. The university encourages continued support for its music education initiatives through attendance or contributions.
